The following websites provide useful resources for students and scholars of rhetoric.

RSA attempts to include the most useful sites in this list. Suggestions for additional links that might be added can be submitted to the RSA Executive Director.

PJournals

The African Yearbook of Rhetoric (dormant)
The African Yearbook of Rhetoric was a multi-lingual, peer-reviewed scholarly journal devoted to the development of rhetoric studies on and in Africa. ISSN: 2220-2188. It was a publication of AfricaRhetoric Publishing and was published from 2010–2020.

Argumentation and Advocacy
Publishes articles concerning any dimension of argumentation studies, including but not limited to contemporary or historical argumentation theory, informal logic, pragma-dialectics, interpersonal arguing, culture and argument, public and political argument, legal argument, and forensics and pedagogy.

College Composition and Communication
Publishes research and scholarship in rhetoric and composition studies that supports college teachers in reflecting on and improving their practices in teaching writing and that reflects the most current scholarship and theory in the field.

College English
Publishes articles about literature, rhetoric and composition, critical theory, creative writing theory and pedagogy, linguistics, literacy, reading theory, pedagogy, and professional issues related to the teaching of English.

Communication and Critical / Cultural Studies
Publishes scholarship on communication as a theory, practice, technology, and discipline of power. The journal features critical inquiry that cuts across academic boundaries to focus on social, political, and cultural practices from the standpoint of communication.

Enculturation: A Journal of Rhetoric, Writing, and Culture
Enculturation is a refereed journal devoted to contemporary theories of rhetoric, writing, and culture. It accepts academic work in all media forms suitable for web-based publication, including conventional articles, hypertexts, videos, and multimedia projects.

JAC (ceased publication)
A forum for the interdisciplinary study of rhetoric, writing, culture, and politics, JAC published four issues per year, featuring articles, interviews, book reviews, and essay responses to previously published articles.

Kairos
A refereed open-access online journal exploring the intersections of rhetoric, technology, and pedagogy.

Philosophy & Rhetoric
Publishes articles on the relations between philosophy and rhetoric, including the connections between logic and rhetoric, the philosophical aspects of argumentation, philosophical views on the nature of rhetoric, philosophical analyses of the relation to rhetoric of other areas of human culture and thought, and psychological and sociological studies of rhetoric with a strong philosophical emphasis.

Poroi
An online, peer-reviewed journal publishing scholarship on rhetoric in inquiry and culture.

Pre/Text
A journal of rhetorical theory.

Quarterly Journal of Speech
Publishes articles and book reviews of interest to those who take a rhetorical perspective on the texts, discourses, and cultural practices by which public beliefs and identities are constituted, empowered, and enacted. 

RhetNet
RhetNet is a concerted effort to see what publishing on the net might be in its “natural” form. Without leaving print heritage behind entirely, it seeks to adapt to the net rather than only adapting net publishing to print-based convention.

Rhetoric & Public Affairs
An interdisciplinary journal devoted to the history, theory, and criticism of public discourse.

Rhetoric Review
A scholarly interdisciplinary journal publishing in all areas of rhetoric and writing and providing a professional forum for its readers to consider and discuss current topics and issues.

Rhetoric Society Quarterly
Publishes articles in all areas of rhetorical studies, including theory, history, criticism, and pedagogy.

Rhetorica
Published quarterly for the International Society for the History of Rhetoric, includes articles, book reviews, and bibliographies that examine the theory and practice of rhetoric in all periods and languages in relationship to poetics, philosophy, religion, and law.

Rhétorique et Argumentation
Sous la direction de Ruth Amossy et Roselyne Koren 
Le deuxième numéro de la revue Argumentation et analyse du discours se propose de montrer les liens intrinsèques qui unissent argumentation et rhétorique, les bénéfices de leur liaison, voire de  leur indifférenciation, et les enjeux d’un retour à la question accompli sous les auspices de la modernité. Une attention toute particulière est accordée à l’apport des travaux anglo-saxons et à la façon dont des traditions culturelles différentes peuvent se recouper et s’enrichir. POROI
The Project on Rhetoric of Inquiry at the University of Iowa is an interdisciplinary research and study program, the purpose of which is to improve academic inquiry, argumentation, and writing in the arts, humanities, sciences, and professions, especially at the intersections between disciplines.

Rhetoric Africa
Information on the Centre for Rhetoric Studies at the University of Cape Town, the Association for Rhetoric and Communication in Southern Africa, and the African Yearbook of Rhetoric, as well as a great deal of information on rhetoric research on and in Africa. Addresses the interface between rhetoric (as the study of deliberation in public affairs) and the development of democracy by engaging with the international community of scholars and practitioners in rhetoric.

Rhetoric and Composition
This page is intended to list a variety of resources useful to rhetoricians. While many rhetoric and composition pages are written in conjunction with writing centers or specialize in computer-mediated communication, this page also has links to works of classical rhetoric, articles on literacy and education, and a few miscellaneous but useful things — how to subscribe to some highly trafficked mailing lists and links to glossaries of rhetorical terms, for example.

Silva Rhetoricae: The Forest of Rhetoric
This online guide, provided by Dr. Gideon Burton of Brigham Young University, is a guide to the terms of classical and renaissance rhetoric.

Humanities E-Book is a digital collection of 2,200 full-text titles offered by the ACLS in collaboration with fourteen learned societies. Note: When subscribing, you will need to choose the Rhetoric Society of America from the pull-down menu and provide your membership number. You may use your mobile phone number as a substitute. All information is confidential and will not be shared.

American Rhetoric
A clearinghouse of material related to the study of American rhetoric, including speeches, maintained by Michael E. Eidenmuller of The University of Texas at Tyler.

Aristotle’s Rhetoric Online
An online, searchable version of W. Rhys Roberts’s translation of the three books of Aristotle’s Rhetoric.

The Art History Archive
A “library of information about different artistic movements, art groups and specific artists.”

Database of Early English Playbooks (DEEP)
A searchable database on the publishing, printing, and marketing of English Renaissance drama containing reference material (title pages, paratextual matter, advertising features, bibliographic details, and theatrical backgrounds) for every playbook printed in England, Scotland, and Ireland from the first printings through 1660.

Digital Schomburg (New York Public Library) African American Women Writers of the 19th Century
Full-text resource of more than fifty texts by 19th-century African American women. The database is searchable by author, title, keyword, and genre.

The Internet Archive
A collection of video, audio, and texts, the Internet Archive is “a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts.”

The Internet Classics Archive (MIT)
A searchable collection of 441 works of classical literature (mostly Greco-Roman) by 59 authors. Includes work by Aristotle, Cicero, Lysias, Demosthenes, and other major figures of classical rhetoric.

Library of Congress
Includes online materials (images, maps, audio, and video), information on the library, and access to the LOC catalog.

National Archives
Information on the archives’ collections and instructions for visiting scholars.

The Perseus Digital Library
Collection includes Greek and Latin classics, papyri from Duke’s databank, materials on the English Renaissance, the Bolles Collection on the history of London, texts from the Library of Congress’s American Memory Collection (on the Upper Midwest, California, and the Chesapeake), materials on the history of Tufts University, and the Boyle papers on the history of science.

Presidential Rhetoric
Resource site on historical and contemporary presidential rhetoric maintained by Martin Medhurst and Paul Stob. Includes texts of speeches, resources for researching each president, and links to scholarship and graduate programs on presidential rhetoric.

Presidential Speech Archive, Miller Center for Public Affairs, University of Virginia
Transcripts and audio recordings of selected presidential speeches from the past 60 years. Text only of presidential speeches prior to 1960s.

Quintilian’s Institutes of Oratory
Online version of the Institutes of Oratory, from the 1856 English
translation by Rev. John Selby Watson. Includes a history of the text, a biography of Quintilian, and Watson’s preface.

Renascence Editions, University of Oregon
A collection of works printed in English between 1477 and 1799.

Smithsonian Institute Archives of American Art
Includes listings of the archives’ collections and interviews. A small portion of the collection is available online. The site allows image searches and offers a finding aid for the collection as a whole.

The Bedford Bibliography for Teachers of Writing
A massive and occasionally updated bibliography of scholarship on writing and the teaching of writing. Includes a brief history of rhetoric and composition and sections on history and theory; composing, literacy, and the rhetoric of writing; curriculum development; and writing programs.

CompPile
Collection of published work (1939-1999) in postsecondary composition and rhetoric.

Glossary of Rhetorical Terms with Examples
A resource from the classics department at the University of Kentucky offering explanations of key rhetorical terms.

Rebecca Moore Howard’s Bibliographies for Rhetoric & Composition
Collection of bibliographies on topics of interest to scholars in rhetoric and composition. Not all the bibliographies are up to date.

Silva Rhetoricæ
A guide to key terms of classical and Renaissance rhetoric.

Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
Offers in-depth entries on an array of philosophical topics. Each entry is written and updated by an expert (or group of experts) on the topic.

POROI (The Project on Rhetoric of Inquiry, University of Iowa)
An interdisciplinary program exploring “how scholarship and professional discourses are conducted through argument, how paradigms of knowledge are sensitive to social-political contexts, and how the presentation of scholarly and professional findings involves the recognition and negotiation of audiences.”

The Martin Luther King, Jr., Research and Education Institute, Stanford University
An institute dedicated to the ideas and ideals of Dr. King. The institute supports research and educational programs that “contribute to public understanding of King’s life and of the movements inspired by his message of peace with social justice.”

Grants for women scholars in the US and abroad. The “American Fellowships” include funding for dissertation completion as well as postdoctoral research and publication support.

American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Grants
Grants for graduate students and established scholars in the humanities and related social sciences. Note: RSA is a member association of ACLS.

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
Grants available for graduate students, scholars, and teachers.

Fulbright Program – U.S. Department of State
Grants for international work by students and scholars.

Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program – U.S. Department of Education
Grants available to students entering a doctoral program (or who have not yet completed the first year of doctoral study) provide up to 48 months of funding, including payment of tuition and fees and a cost-of-living stipend.

National Endowment for the Humanities
Grants for individuals and organizations in the humanities. Individual grants include fellowships for research at Independent Research Institutions and Digital Humanities Centers, funding for summer research, and support for deepening knowledge relevant to undergraduate teaching

Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities, Visiting Fellows Program – Vanderbilt University
